So it has been too long since I posted anything on the board here, and for that I do apologize guys.  It seems like we got back from New Hampshire and the river just shut down.   To make up for the heat we went fishing at any of the tail race streams that we could get to here in the Southeast.  Their is some fine fishing around here if you are willing to drive a bit.  So now the heat is starting to abate, not to say it won’t be warm for a month or more, but at least we can see some light at the end of the tunnel concerning this heat…  So I am starting to get excited, some of the best fishing is just here in front of us, with the chance at some of the biggest fish.  I hope to get some good pictures this year for the blog….

Wow!  This month is flying by.  I sort of  looked in horror at the page here and realized how long it had been since I posted.  We have been very busy this month.  We had a short vacation to New Hampshire to fish with Karl and Karen in the Connecticut Lakes Region which was a tremendously fun time, but a very long drive.  Thank goodness for Hertz rental cars is all I can say.

The area where we were is called Moose Alley and  twelve miles from the Canadian border. It was absolutely gorgeous, like a Christmas farm took over the state.  We caught landlocked salmon, rainbows and a few brookies and it was an absolute blast fishing with Karl and Karen.  Special kudos for the dinners Karl made us while we were there, everything was fantastic but the lambchops really stand out in my mind.  Thank you for the trip guys!!!

On the home front, the weather is hot and humid.  Casting dries in the evening for rising fish has been a pretty hot as well, but the midday bite is all but nonexistent.  Anything heavily hackled such as Brown Bivisibles, Yellow Stimulators, and  The Animal has been working well in smaller sizes.  Intrepid reporter Charlie Sowell had a nice Sunday evening with some Yellow Sally/brown trout action.  John Mango likewise has been tearing them up in the evening on dries, and Andy has been giving them heck on dries as well… Now for pictures of the great Northeast and local action……

Sorry guys, but the shop will not be open until  12 noon tomorrow.  I was run off the job early today by rain so I have to finish up that house in the morning, and then I will be to the shop. Hope to see you guys tomorrow…..

We found a couple dobsonfly larva(helgrammites) the other night, now is an interesting time to flip rocks, I highly recommend it….

Shop will be closed today, but we will reopen tomorrow as normal.   Sorry if this inconveniences anyone……..

So last Tuesday, Alan Wallace and I got out on the Davidson to see what we could tie into..  Well we got a little later start than I meant for us to due to my lateness, oh well it happens.  But once we got there we made up for lost time, with Alan quickly getting into a fish on a midge.  Then his second fish appeared to be a good one so we put it in the net and made a few photos…  A little later on I hooked a nice brown that jumped like a rainbow throwing so much spray in the air you could see color spectrums.  It jumped 6 or 7 times, it was crazy!!!  Then we closed out the day chasing a roughly 27 inch brown that I hooked.  The nymph was pulled out when he ran through a pod of other fish and the line hooked another big fish which just broke everything.  Well if we landed everyone we hooked it would be no fun at all( I keep telling myself that)! Hope everyone is doing well and catching some fish!

So I realize not posting for 30 days is a bad idea.  I apologize for the blunder, but it has been a busy 30 days since the customer appreciation event.  First off the event went very well,  who knew that you could cook a pig with cardboard and it be the most delicious pork ever! Hats off to Andy and Griff for the fine job on the meats…  Barton Wyatt was the big winner taking home the TFO Bug Launcher rod and everyone left full.  Then some came back and got full again!!!  It was a lot of fun, and I believe we  will need a bigger hog for next year.

The fishing for trout has been going full blast this whole time,  and the bugs have been extremely cooperative.  The water levels have been excellent compared to the last few years, and when you combine good water levels and good bugs it makes for alot of fun.  Also, we had some fine days on the Cherokee trophy waters and the Davidson, just a great spring to fish!  Now, we look forward to some time in Tennessee on the S. Holston for trout, Redeyes on the Chattooga and Chauga, and whatever side trips we can find.

Last but not least,  we were able to start the free fly tying classes on Thursday nights.  This was something I really wanted to be able to do as I love tying and teaching  new people how to tie.  Call me to make sure of seating as I have a limited amount of space, but im happy to help whenever.  Until we see you in the shop, here is a few pics from the last month to hold you over…..

It was truly a great month, full of good times and good friends.  Hope to see you all soon!

So this Saturday is our official Grand Opening/Customer Appreciation day.  The food should be outstanding, im really looking forward to serving everyone.  We are giving away a TFO Bug Launcher rod, and a dozen of dries, nymphs, and streamers as the day goes along.  Then Griff Holland and friends are  going to play bluegrass.  So my idea is that everyone should go fish in the morning, and come to the shop for lunch! Thats what I would do…..lol!  Anyhow, the river is still producing well. Think Caddis and Cahills… Target fish in the riffles for the clinger nymphs and swing soft hackles for the emerging caddis or any pattern that imitates those stages…  We went and fished the Oconaluftee again on Monday, and below are the results…….

Kellie finally got her first 20″ fish and she fought it like a pro!!!  Also Jaime our birthday girl got her a big birthday rainbow, which I had to take a bath for but that is another story…..lol.  I caught this really nice one around 25″ and it put up a monster fight…. It was a great day!

Had the pleasure of fishing with my brother-in-law Marco, Dan Farmer and Mark Ratsch.  We decided to fish the trophy section in Cherokee and could have not made a better choice.  The fishing was red hot all day!!!!   It was one of those ridiculous days where when you retell the stories people think you are full of it… Anyhow, here are a few pics of that trip.

Thats right, this is how Dan rolls!…. I told you guys he was straight thugging with a new rod.  Yesterday could have been titled the Dan Farmer fishing show. The man was on fire!! It was fun fishing with him,  we came close to having a picture of a 30 plus inch rainbow but I just barely missed the netting before the hook pulled.  It was a good day.

This has been a phenomenal week for fishing.  Kellie and I fished the Tuckaseegee and the Chattooga on Tuesday. My streamer was a hit, the eighth cast I had a fish over twenty inches on, but it came unpinned(operator error no doubt!).  Kellie had her first 30 fish day so that was awesome.  Ashley and Ty from Atlanta have been fishing the Chattooga hard this week and have pictures to show for it. Nice Brook trout Ashley!    Dan Farmer made the trip up to Cherokee to fish the trophy waters and was extremely pleased that he did, as I delivered his custom 10′ 4 weight just before he went.  From the stories and pictures, he christened it well…..  Guys just want to thank everyone for your continued patronage, we really appreciate it. Hope everyone can tell that we are extremely excited to be serving your flyfishing needs, and it is always nice to make new friends.  The “grand” opening is officially scheduled for April 17th, so bring your appetites.  More info to follow on the party……  So for now enjoy these pictures from the week….

This spring is turning out to be one of the most phenomenal years that I can remember for bug activity, but I still cannot bring myself to fish nymphs and dries 100% of the time…. Case in point, tomorrow Kellie and I head to the Tuck to fish and  I am gonna fish some meat down deep and see what happens.  Have had this fly in my head for  a while now, got on the vise and made it a reality…. Tell me what you think….
